The Shri Radha Rani Temple, lovingly called Ladli Ji Mandir, is believed to be over 5,000 years old and was rebuilt in its present grand form around 1675 by Raja Veer Singh Dev, an ancestor of the Bharatpur royal family. Crowning Barsana's Brahmagiri Hill, the shrine has drawn devotees for centuries who climb its sacred steps to behold Ladli Lal — Radha Rani seated beside Krishna. Its living traditions, seva rituals and daily aartis have been preserved faithfully across generations by the temple's Goswami priests.

Carved from striking red and white Rajasthani sandstone, Ladli Ji Mandir is a stunning example of classic Braj temple architecture. Intricately sculpted pillars, arched doorways and jharokha balconies rise across the hilltop, while vivid frescoes depicting Radha-Krishna leelas adorn the inner walls. The temple's shikharas symbolise the eternal union of Radha and Krishna. From its breezy courtyard, sweeping views of Barsana village and the surrounding Braj plains unfold. Every carving reflects the devotion of the artisans who shaped this magnificent hilltop shrine centuries ago.

Barsana is revered as the birthplace of Shri Radha Rani, the beloved of Lord Krishna and the very embodiment of pure devotion. Legend holds that Radha appeared as the daughter of King Vrishabhanu and Queen Kirti, and her enchanting childhood leelas with Krishna unfolded across these hills. The name 'Ladli' means the cherished, adored one. Devotees believe that worshipping Radha first opens the path to Krishna's grace — which is why pilgrims across the world hold Barsana among the holiest dhams of the entire Braj Mandal.

Barsana lies about 43 km from Mathura, 50 km from Vrindavan and 21 km from Govardhan, well connected by road along the Delhi–Agra route. The nearest railway station is Mathura Junction, while the closest airport is Agra (Kheria) around 90 km away, with Delhi's IGI Airport roughly 130 km. Taxis, shared autos and buses run regularly from Mathura and Vrindavan. From the base of Brahmagiri Hill, devotees climb over 200 steps to the temple, with a palanquin (doli) service available for elderly pilgrims.

The ideal months to visit Barsana are October to March, when the weather stays pleasant for the hilltop climb. Early mornings bring cooler air and smaller crowds for a peaceful darshan. The temple comes most alive during Radhashtami in August–September, celebrating Radha Rani's appearance day, and during the world-famous Lathmar Holi a week before main Holi. Kartik month and Janmashtami also draw huge gatherings. For festival visits, arrive early and book your seva and guide coordination well in advance to avoid the heavy rush.

A visit to Barsana pairs beautifully with the sacred sites nearby. Just below the hill lies Pili Pokhar, the golden pond linked to Radha Rani, along with Mor Kutir where the peacock leelas are remembered. Six kilometres away sits Nandgaon, home to the Nand Baba Temple and Krishna's childhood. Sankari Khor, Prem Sarovar and Kirti Mandir add further depth to the pilgrimage. Govardhan Hill and Kusum Sarovar are a short drive away, making Barsana a perfect base for exploring the wider Braj Mandal region.

Barsana offers simple, devotion-focused accommodation ideal for pilgrims. Several dharamshalas and ashrams near the temple provide clean, budget-friendly rooms, while guest houses in the village comfortably host families. For more amenities, many devotees stay in Mathura or Vrindavan — around an hour away — where hotels of every budget are available, and visit Barsana on a day trip.
